Depends on ur purpose... i.e. for stock market and / or anything else ?? If ur work is only stockMarket and u want to spend minimum, even Compaq Presario (based on Celeron) is also ok (presario is their entry level model). But it tends to get slower if you load it up with too many programs (especially graphics related - celeron does not work better with memory intensive applications). If u are looking at the future and wish to have some cushion on memory and speed(for unforeseen requirements), go for EVO models in Compaq. We see now-a-days, wireless LAN setups coming many places in India (which is common if you travel abroad). So its better to have a laptop / notebook with WLAN facility which gives ease of connection.

Both these series (EVO / Presario from Compaq) are the best return on the money you spend. I have used both and very happy with performance. Not a single hardware issue. A collegue of mine had some problem with his Compaq laptop and he got prompt services with even free replacements (within wty period). U might get cheaper laptops from other brands as well but ultimately when you will look back after some time, this difference of hardly a few thousands will definitely not pinch you.

BUT, they are slightly heavy (however high they may claim, the laptop with some other stuff inside the leather bag does not weigh less than 4 Kg). So its really a pain if you have to walk down with ur laptop on your shoulder, as a part of your daily routine.

If ur laptop has a style-statement value alongwith utility value, go for Sony Vaio... its my next dream. Its ultra-light... but the costliest...

If utility value and budget over-weighs everything else (and u dont want to compromise on quality), go for Compaq.

If you are located in Mumbai and wants to buy Sony Vaio, I can help you to get genuine advice for model selection as well as try to give you good price from Sony World, which is owned by one of my close friends.

Hi Aad,

Thanks for your response. I was thinking about Dell, as its the largest selling brand in USA my sister has one but it gave trouble twice within a year nevertheless the service was prompt.

Do you have any experience with Dell? Would this just be an exceptional case?

My Dad has a toshiba satellite and even that has given trouble several times

About Sony Vaio I've heard spare parts are astronomically expensive, which would have significant impact if the warranty has expired and you have not taken a service contract.

Is this true?

Yup I'm in Mumbai and thanks for offering to help.

I'm buying basically for gaming

Frankly, I do not have any personal experience with Dell (or any other brands except Compaq & Sony). I am just sharing here experience of a friend of mine who has Dell. It works well (he was abroad so was using Dell there. Got his laptop back with him). So far as I know, Dell do not have Service Centre in each and every part of country. U should'nt face any problem since u are in Mumbai. But this fellow, who is from Pune, has to book a complaint after which their person visits ur place (without any spares), checks and suggests if any spare is needed. He then goes back with your moeny, orders the spares which are dispatched directly to your place. Once they reach your place, u have to call him again so that he comes and repairs the same... moral of the story is, this is quite time-consuming. Please check about their authorised service centre around ur place (plenty of dealers will be there who will sell u whatever model / make u want, but tell you to contact service centre point-blank, when u need any support). Dell is probably good as long as it is working fine, but when it needs service, u may have to run from pillar to post. Of course this is a story 2 yrs back, things might have changed now. Visit http://supportapj.dell.com/support/t...=in&l=en&s=bsd where they have all links for customer support.

If you need laptop for gaming, u should go for laptops based on AMD processors which are far superior to Intel when it comes to graphics-related, memory-intensive programs. They will come cheaper also.

I know nothing about Toshiba... since ur father is using it, u may ask him about their service back-up.

I really do not know about pricing of spares as regards to Sony. What you are saying might be true. I am sure you will check ACTUAL pricing before assuming what u have heard. U might find this data online. U may visit http://www.sonyindia.co.in/VAIO/comparision.htm to find comparison of all Sony Vaio models at one place.
