Just received a SMS 'Your mobile number has won GBP 500,000/- in 2012 Coca Cola UK mobile promo. To claim your prize send your name, age, tel. via email to ******@hotmail.co.uk

Ahh, so finally I can stop trading and buy a shack on the beach!!!

Seriously, many otherwise rational people respond to such the fraudsters and start communicating over email or phone, and get trapped into paying 'legal fees' 'witholding taxes' etc, and once in, try to salvage the situation by paying the 'final demad' to claim the lottery/jackpot/inheritence etc.

By the time they get wiserr, there are stories of people who have lost their lifesavings and I had read of a bank manager who parted a couple of millions of his banks money and was subsequently jailed.

Guess all members of TJ would be aware of this, but to those who do not, be warned - it is a scam.

We get these emails informing us that we are lucky winners of Coca Cola or IBM lottery or some one ( uncle ) died in South Africa who left an estate of 251 million dollars in my name......these are from fraudsters from a nation known for such frauds.....I am sure my uncle will not leave even a TVS Scooty for me in inheritance and I have never got even a Rs 10 note lying in the street so how and why should I get few million dollars ??......:D But people fall for such traps. We all know that doubling gold ornaments is scientifically not possible but open any local newspaper and you will see these fraudsters still in business.....

Blindly delete all such e-mails informing you about your winning a lottery/
uncle leaving behind a fortune in other country OR delete all such SMS messages without bothering to read them.

Thanks, I do read it as it makes interesting reading... Who know? Next uncle may be more generous than this. The maximum that I have been offered was 25% comission on a US$ 40 million transfer... so this offer is peanuts, am waiting for someone to better the offer. :D

Ten and more years ago it was called: Nigeria Connection. Older versions have been sent by fax and when the Internet approved, they started to use e-mail addresses.

Why Nigeria Connection?

They spoke from an official government connection and government bank in Nigeria. They got a lot of money and now would need somebody to transfer the money from A to B. The provision given was promised very high, but please send in advance some few % of the promised amount to an account........................

( That is why I asked them if they not want to give me first some money as they will get it back later from what they promised me :) )

Over ten years ago when I was in the asset management, we had a few customers which told us about it and some did very hardly believe that this is just a fake to get for free some easy money from stupid believers of there story.

One way, if you not want to joke them as we like to do, is to send the mail directly to the police. It will not much help, but police can find out from where the e-mail was sent through the IP address as all of our mails and post have such an IP address. ( Just in case you do not know that :) or you do not post tunnel d and will be sure that your IP is always changed )

The newer version of this e-mails or now SMS are just some kind of amendments from the Nigeria Connection version.
