Yesterday, soon after installing WindowsXP disaster struck my PC.There were multiple error messages regarding OS.When I re-booted my PC, I found that all my files/softwares had VANISHED.

On checking drives Cdive shows 80% used space,D drive shows 60% used space,E drive shows 55% used space,But there is not a single visible file/folder.Does it mean that files are still on my HDD?If yes, how can I "unhide" them?

How have u seen that 80 is used space ( Dos Prompt ?)

First of all take backup if u haven't by booting using a PenDrive or connecting the harddisk to another where Antivirus is available.

Then check for virus using good one Kaspersky is what I can recommend.Trial version is also available on their site.

Always take backup - I take daily backup of imp. stuff.

Try the following ..(With Risk as editing of registry should not be attempted if u do not have systems background )

Part 1 -

  1. Goto Command Prompt "cmd"
  2. Goto your drive . e.g. "d:", "e:", "f:", etc..
  3. Type "dir /ah"
  4. (You might see see the files/folders with hidden attributes)
  5. Type "attrib -r -a -s -h"

Part 2 -
Or u can try the view tab CHECK "show hidden files and folders".

Part 3 - Using regedit

  1. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio\Explorer\Advanced.
  2. Right-click on Hidden and select Modify.
  3. Change the value to 1 and click OK to save your changes.

Part 4 -
Re-try using antivirus
console.exe is the name of virus which forces folders to hidden attrib.
Kaspersky/AVG..

If all above fails I would suggest you to take the PC to H/W shop or call them to work at your home...
