REQ: SPECIAL AUDIO RECORDING DEVICE

Respected forum members

Hi this is Neha here.

This is my second post here and i need some desperate help.

I am not a frequent visitor of this forum but at times in my spare time I do visit as the posts I must admit here are really knowledgebale and its a really wonderful community and some great people out here.

I want to know whether it is possible to actually record voice in a small device. Actually I am a student of CA finals and have exams in November 2005. Our faculty teaches so fast in class that its not possible for me to write what he says. I was just thinking that is there any way in which we can record the voice for say a continuous lecture of 2 hrs so that I
can later after coming from my class make my notes.

I tried to make a search but seems that either that topic I mean device which is small and capable of recording lectures for 2 hours at a stretch has not been discussed here or that I am unable to find out.

I was just thinking that do we have such facilities or some device wich is capable of actually recording voice from a distance for 2 hours at a stretch. I would prefer it to be small so that my tutor is not able to see as he might object.

And yes if there is some device like this, is it actually available in India. I stay at Burdwan, a town near Kolkata. My email address is [email protected]

Thanking you for your anticipated help and suggestions.

Most MP3 players have the recording features. Ebay is good source. Small recording devices are frequently used in offices today. Please check with Electronic as well as office equipment stores in Calcutta, you should not have difficulity finding these in todays world.

Good Luck

Neha, for you question - is there any portable device that can record voice? - the answer is yes, there are many, available in India. Certain Cell phones today even have voice recorders (I hope "that much" portable is what you are looking for). There are USB pen drive-sized recorders too. Go to any place like China Bazaar, Honkong Bazaar or Burma Bazaar (those are the names of the smuggled goods shops in Bangalore - and in other towns like Kolkata too they use similar names to indicate what those shops stand for), and ask for portable recording devices. In fact, you can even get "tape based" recorders (the tape is 1/4-th of norma audio casette in size), it may not be very easy/pleasant thing to keep changing the casettes in the middle of the class as the typical duration of those mini-casettes is 30 minutes.

Having said that - now for the question - Can you use it in the class to record the faculty's voice - the answer is - perhaps yes and perhaps no. It all depends whether you sit in the front row, and whether you can record the voice with his/her knowledge (people act and talk unnaturally when they become conscious of such recording). The audio-visual media folks use expensive and non-portable mikes (uni-directional or multidirectional) depending on the quality requirement and application. They even hide very portable wireless operated mikes under the costumes of the speaker or the actor, as we all often see.

Having said that again - a voice that you can't understand when listening live - IMHO, it is very less likely that you can understand from its recording. My suggestion to you is - look for an alternative source of instruction. Is there anyone else from whom you can take tution classes? I don't want to say books can be substitutes for class room education - but most people consider books (and internet) as a way of picking up knowledge at one's own pace.

Having said that too - This forum is not a right forum for the question you have posed. For any trading related questions, yes, this the forum. Though you would find members here trying to help other members in whatever way, there are far better internet forums where you can get a better expert advise in a very less time. You may try with such forums, and I am sure you would be flooded with some really useful advice.

Wish you good luck in your search for the device as well as with your lessons.

THIS IS AN OK FORUM & A VERY FRIENDLY ONE AT THAT. THIS General Chit Chat category is just fine. :)
