Stock market returns

We see lot of expectations from the market. Some people go in for above 100% to -80% (Highest and lowest i hear so far). Is there a way to calculate the stock returns over 5 year periods. senior traders may share their experience. If anybody can update me his expected return, with the rationale (Why he think so), please post

Historically stock markets (investing) has given a returns of about 20/25 %, over longer period say 7-10yrs. so one is better off expecting such returns.
There may be some high returns for 2/3 yrs, but over longer period of time expect moderate returns (investing).
Even 20/25% is a far more exceptional return over long run.

To add to this, there is some similar survey carried out in australia, where they find equity market investors expect for a return ranging from 14-24%. with a concentration around 18%. 64% of the investors trade less than 3 times in a year, 88% trade less than 12 times a year.

Dear amit,

I am not able to make out the point you are trying to tell. May be the time i started investing (14-15 years back) sensex was around 2800, and today it stand at 15000 (with a very low of around 8000 in March). gold during those days costed something 400 per gram (I dont remember about milk) today it costs around 1500 per gram. So what are you driving at? The equity is appreciating faster than consumer goods? Please tell me exactly what is the message you are trying to communicate.
