Default Nuclear Energy

Really do not know WHY ManMohanSingh Govt is after Nuclear Energy. Though definitely it is a CHEAP energy but not SAFEST. After years of service the equipment becomes so radioactive that disposal becomes COSTLIER than COMMISSIONING.Except FRANCE no other country in the world is using NUCLEAR power to great extent. It is like solving the problem by MERE postponing it.With environmentalists on RISE ,government will find it tough going in future.

Btw,nothing is 100% safe. It is always the trade-off of Risk and Reward.
Now-a-day, whole world has become lot more interested in Nuclear energy.
There is also an ETF in US on this (code NLR). Platinum and Uranium has started behaving more like Industrial metal then precious metals. As trader + investor, I am interested in emerging theme. Not sure about the companies in India that will benefit from it.

[1] Because carbon based fuel reserves are drying up.
[2] Need to look at alternative sources:
[i] Hydel and Wind & stuff: we ain't doing much what with all the
agitation, every time a dam is set up
[ii] Nuke: seems the way forward, people dont know anything much about
it to start protesting and its cheap
[3] Finally guv needs something to show as a significant foreign policy achievement in office.

There may be more that I cant think of off the top of my head.

On the point [2](ii) Nuke as you have explained, it can be said that the input material Uranium is not easily available, have to procured from a handful of countries. These countries enjoy the freedom in raising the prices just what we see in case of crude oil by OPEC. These countries impose restrictive rules as and when it suits their purpose. Hence supply of Uranium to our proposed Nuke plants are bound to be irregular and very costly. The result will be the cost per unit of power generated in Nuke plant will not be cheap compared to coal based one.

But decommissioning a nuclear plant is costlier than commissioning. Of course nuclear power is cheap but not safe. The best solution is SOLAR power.
