Default Power Dressing for Men

this article came in Cal times last month. Saved it, so like to share with all here.

8 FAUX PAS MEN MAKE

When done right, power dressing can turn your personality around. But if you mess with your formals, you could end up looking completely inappropriate. Rhutu Kabe lists out eight common dressing mistakes. Read and avoid

!) TIES WITH HALF-SLEEVED SHIRTS

In a formal setting, showing off your fore-arms is considered barbarian. So, wearing a fullsleeved shirt is the only option — more so if you’re wearing a tie. However, for hotter climates, men could opt for either a half-sleeved shirt only or a full-sleeved shirt without a tie.

2) BODY ART

Body art may be hip but wearing sundry tattoos, odd piercings and sparkly jewellery is socially unacceptable with formal attire. Leave the jewellery for a party. Tattoos and piercings are far from proper for a formal do, so they should be avoided or covered if done.

3)THE RIGHT SHOES

Shoes are a crucial part of your attire. But the rules here are more relaxed since there are so many choices available. Lace-up shoes are preferred over slip-ons as they look more professional. Wearing white shoes is a complete no-no — leave those for when you’re out lounging.

4) SLEEVES AND CUFFLINKS

Folding up a full-sleeved shirt should be avoided — it tarnishes the ‘proper’ formal look and doesn’t do much for your shirt. Cufflinks are a very niche look; if you can pull off, go ahead. But remember — cufflinks or no cufflinks, your shirt’s cuff must be buttoned properly.

5) WHITE SOCKS AND SHOES

Wearing white socks is not okay unless it’s part of a uniform. A pair of beige pants should be teamed with beige socks or should be matched with the colour of shoes, which should be tan or brown (not black).

7)LOUD PRINTS AND ANIMATED TIES

Flowers, leaves, paisleys and vines look great on paintings or even on beach-wear but not on formal office wear. Ties with Mickey Mouse prints, tiger stripes, broad, bright and loud checks are also strictly avoidable.

8) WEARING BLAZERS

Blazers can be combined with dress pants. Your blazer can be teamed with different coloured pants. But your trouser and blazer colour must gel together. Wearing a blazer with a pair of jeans is not apt.

Sipped the Sixth one

6) BELTS WITH BIG BUCKLES

Belts with big, flashy, studded or coloured buckles look tacky when you’re wearing a pair of dress trousers and a crisp shirt. Your belt buckle should ideally be the same width as your belt — and subtle.
