Invest in GM, Ford and Gold?

Hi, I am new to the site. I am a prof. but not in econmics and also a part-time trader. What are some ideas on whether to invest in gold through gold mines or Ford and General Motors, since the govenment may invest in them?

Any special opportunites anyone sees?
