Can any body tell why some companies split their share book values.It may sound basic but I am new to trading and it will be helpful if anybody gives the answer.

Hi all,
Can somebody help me understand the difference between a stock split vs bonus shares? Does stock split essentially mean splitting of the face value too? ie(if a share is of face value Rs, 10. After split will it get reduced to say eg., Rs.5) Thx in advance Pravise |
