Calculating historical EPS

Hi

I am right saying that to get the historical EPS, get the historical share capital value from historical balance sheet and divide it by face value.

face value never changes right..???

The EPS can be calculated by subtracting the dividends on preferred stocks from net income, and dividing the result by the average outstanding shares.

thanks Kapil.. i asked the wrong question....what i ment was historical outstanding share.. ie. outstanding share=share capital/fave value. am i right?
