Yes ,why refer Hinterland of UP ,just 15 yrs back i have seen that nowhere in 1 of the the whole State of India having any Drinking Water or Sanitation installed,Manipur.
A State which even have reference in Mahabharat, where the Great warrior 'Arjun's' Ashamedha Horse was stopped & Arjun was defeated by none other than the Daughter of Manipur king, the cunning 'Krishna' cajoled her to marry Arjun & their son was the indomitable 'Abhimunya'.
A state having that long cultural Heritage was devoid of any type of Water Mangement.
The man whose face is printed in currency notes whom Munnabhai refered ,just 66 yrs ago had to organize 'Charkah's to weave thread. This depicts we had NOTHING ,the country's 1st Airforce had an aeroplane ,(which was personally used by the foster father of Ratan Tata),on donation.
This was our State of affairs ,where as now for anybody to get min. 10k per month Salary is not a Dream anymore.
Much has to be done to have equitable distribution of basic amenities to all strata of the society across the country in large.
Let us 'Chak De' all these & work relentlesly to Stand Up to be counted amongst the best.
We all know who is that the world's 1st known Cesearian Baby is from Rome but do we know the Knowledge travelled from a place now in Central Rajasthan (Refer Daniken).
Do we know W.D.Gann came to India to visit an orthodox tamil family's youngest son ,staying in a village appoximately 150 km from Chennai, who had no formal education in Mathematics ,doing his calculations in Slate & chalk, widely praised & acknowledged for his theorems in the tri-monthly magazine of 'Royal Society of Mathametica' publised from London (in pre independence days).Gann was exposed to 9 & sq of 9 in India.
We have many such Heritage the post will become long,it is not on thin air this Nation is built, let us have Heart full of Faith & determination.

Red face Re: I want to sell SBI @ Rs.10000 per share - Not kidding

How could rural india progress when

1) It takes more than 3 weeks(still waiting!) for opening a savings bank account in a bank?(Not SBI, it is HDFC BANK!)

2)the villagers are forced not to open bank account because he dont know how to write(literate only to write his name)?

3)villagers are told that banks will loot all the wealth by getting thumb impression on all papers?(done by local private bankers)

4)building a small shed or building requires numerous visits to the village office with "no staff" to obtain possession certificate to final permission?

5)everything in rural india is slow...

And thank god, people here in my village are not busy as the people I saw in city!

And it is the productivity of each person is reduced only because of this attitude and comfort seeking attitude of OFFICIALS who hail from cities!!!

Sorry if I crossed any limit!!! But I cant hold myself back....
And I am still waiting for the bank account to be opened

The western man who wrote the Biography of Mao-Se-Tung in 1968 asked the Leader how he will combat the Machines of the Developed nations;the Leader pointed the finger towards the innumerable faceless Mass.
It is 100% true that the villages has no Electrification/ Water Management / Education / Health.Who has the audacity to ignore the facts but it is the question of a Glass of Water ,whether half empty or half full.
The guy who implemented 'Micro Credit Finance' is from a more underdeveloped Nation in comparision to India. The concept was a sweeping success & World followed on his foot steps.
He always saw the Glass to be Half Full.

However i am adding this line after pondering ,that there is a chance of mis-reading me,i am fully in sync with Amit ,that
an Equitable distribution is necessary than the polarisation, but becoz of the presence of polarization of Amenities our thoughts should not lead us to a generalised apathatic view for the Rural India but rather an enourmous Future potentiality to be envisaged.

Well that illustrates the point. Not only Govt but private sector also show apathetic attitude towards rural India. But this also demonstrates one thing that at least private banks as well are going to rural India and that Villagers are getting net connection , which is surely a pointer in right direction. If villagers raise their voice against such attitude in various fora without any inferiority complex, days are not far when India will be a super economy

Kuriako, I advise you to mail directly to HDFC bank Mumbai HQ giving details of your application , They are quite friendly. But still if you get nearby SBI branch, that would be better.

Hi Kuriako,
I dont think we can genaralise that the villagers dont know how to read & write (nowadays, call centers and Software companies have started their branch operations in many towns too), or can we generalise villagers are still applying thumb impression or everything in rural India is slow. Gone are the days where people were dumb and ignorant and were taken for a ride. Even illiterate people are nowadays knowledgeable enough as to what's right and what's wrong. For that matter, I feel that ignorant investors in stock market (no knowledge of TA & FA) are making more money than the knowledgeable one's (maybe they are ignorant of the fact that there's a thing called 'StopLoss' )
