What is F-Chart/Ami Broker/Metadata

Hi Folks,
please do not mind the level of the question.
I am new here, this is my first thread.

I saw many threads relating to these software, and discussing environmental settings and developing formulaes. But, being new, i wanted to know WHAT IS FCHART or Ami broker or Metadata for that matter. What is the basic purpose of these softwares, how do they help.
Clearly it can be used by a lay man (by that i mean, having basic knowledge of Financial Terms).
So please, whenver ny one of you pros, find time, just address to it.
