Default Ex date and dividend question

If Ex date is 15th July, from what date onwards should I be holding the stock to qualify for the dividend? What if I sell all stocks of that company around 2.00PM on that date? Please clarify.

Usually if you sell any time before the Ex Date you will not get dividend. (It is usually the one day earlier to the day on which end-day holding will be used to determine dividend stock).

Note that this can work against you sometimes: If you buy exactly one day before the ex date you may still not get dividend based on how your broker credits your shares. I have not had this problem but have heard about it earlier.

Thank you. Does NSDL credit the shares on T+3 basis?
