Hello Keswanna,
Sectors I like from the long term perspective are Hospitals and telecom.
Hospital stocks like Appollo Hospitals,Indraprastha Medical.Even if there is a down turn in the global or Indian economy people will still have to spend money on health care.If there is a global downturn, people will try to find cheaper healthcare facilities around the globe.Today a lot of foreigners come to appollo hospitals for certain operations. There is not much downside in this industry. The growth will be steady.
Telecom is the next big thing with innovations like IPTV,VOIP(Good for ISP's).Mobile phone is going to be a feature packed personal entertainment device. And there is still lot to come in that space.Stocks in this space are Bharti Airtel,Reliance Communication Ventures,MTNL.

what to do? rather give emphasis to, what not to do?

not to be lured by "cheap valuations"
not to invest in midcaps, particularly the new listings
not to time the market
not to loose patience, its never the last day to buy or sell
not to follow the advice of the "experts"
not to live in false hope
not to lose hope

if your investment criteria is "fire and forget", i mean long term then valuations are still attractive. and beware of cheap valuations of the midcaps, just stick to blue chips.
