I am a newbie here. Please help me to understand the following terms:
1.Price band
2.Freezing
3.Thank you
4. Kumar
Here goes :
1. Price range
2. Imposing a (price ?) ceiling or a floor ... can also mean the process of converting water to ice (for enjoying a peg later) ... also used metaphorically , when u say u want to freeze a memory ... e.g. of having made lots of money in a scrip ( or ... in a different context.. in a script)
3. A greeting intended to show appreciation to the other person ... can also be used sarcastically at times
4. A very common Indian surname ...sometimes even a name (but none has been known to duplicate it like 'Jerome K Jerome' ... a famous erstwhile B'lore based bureaucrat ... , I mean no one calls himself 'Kumar R. Kumar')

I hope this clarifies

AGILENT:cool:

PS Now pl dont ask : what is B'lore

You've been rather harsh on the newbie Agilent,
So much so that he's stunned and silent;
Am not too sure he's with you on this joke,
Methinks you've given him an unfair poke.:(

Now why don't you just come out fair & clean,
"Price band" & "Freezing", what do they really mean?
That is the question being asked of you,
He's a fellow boarder just asking for his due.:)

Thanks Huineng (psssst... Kumar ??)

Listen I hope u are not sad or saracstic, given that my clarifications were rather terse

But seriously, I think you can afford to be more detailed abt the queries .... I mean cite the context in brief , so the 'responder' can understand the paradigm u r referring to

e.g If I want guys on this forum to tell me the meaning of ..... let's say... 'earnings' ... I can bet u there wd be at least 5 different explanations

Trust you understand

AGILENT:cool:

PS Pardon my inquisitiveness , but whats the meaning/origin of Huineng , er..er..Kumar ??

Thanks for calling a spade a spade, Jaideep. In your typical style you have been gentle and tactful.
But I'm afraid I'm not feeling the slightest sense of patience, composure, nor equanimity. I'm feeling pretty darn pissed off.
More than being harsh, it's an unworthy example of a member acting superior, snobbish, mocking, being derisive and contemptuous. In all my time in this most August Forum, I have not come across a more ludicrous and farcical a reply to a very straight and honest query. Some of us answer hundereds of them.

Quite honestly Agilent, this was in utter bad taste and shows you in very poor light indeed.
You seem intelligent enough to see what huineng had really wanted to know more about.
Your reply tells him and the rest of us, barring a sneering few, that you have merely been downright mean.
As a fellow member here I see myself in my complete right in asking you to please refrain from making such posts showing utter disrigard to the dignity of another fellow member.
Far from being sarcastic, huineng's reply clearly reflects his upset state of mind at your completely thoughtless broadside.
If you really didn't understand his query, a civil way of asking him to be more clear would have been enough. Not that price band and freezing are abstract terms to all of us in the markets that should require any further clarification.
Remember too that there may be those here who can leave behind some pretty caustic and stinging comebacks to some very ordinary and meaningless posts that get written here, whether on the markets or otherwise.
Regards.

Dear Kumar,

Price Band may have different meanings in different contexts but as you have asked about freezing as well, I guess the context here was Daily Price Bands applicable to the securities.

A band is to be understood as a range. Daily price band is the range in which only a specified security can move. If it hits a certain percentage (specified by the exchange) on a a particular day above/below its previous close price, trading in the security will cease. This cease is called freezing. Once the price moves down/up from freeze level, the trading will resume once again.

Different securities are assigned different price bands on the basis of a no. of pre-defined risk-management criterias. The list of securities under various price bands is available at http://www.nseindia.com/content/equities/eq_pricebands.htm . The list keeps on fluctuating everyday and is available at the same url.

For Example, Let's say security X's closing price on 27/03/06 is Rs. 100 and a 10% price band is applicable on that security for trading on 28/03/06. So, on 28/03/06, if its price hits Rs. 110/- no buy/sell order above that price will be accepted. It means the price will be freezed at Rs. 110/-. However, trading will start once again if price moves down to say Rs. 109/-. On a down-side the freeze will apply at the level of Rs. 90/-.

Hope this is helpful.

Best Regards,
--Ashish
