How acquisition benefits shareholders ?

Hi Friends,

I am new to trading and bought some Patni after rumours of the takeover surfaced. Was wondering how share holders like me will benefit if we hold on to the shares and the deal actually goes through. Specifically - what happens to the share price in the market after the acquisition price is announced ? Does it generally stay at or above the acqusition price for some time ?
