SELL and BUY

could any one help me on this....i usually get calls saying that sell and then buy to book the profit...pls do give me details on how can we sell and then buy...also is it possible in intraday....

Presently this is possible only in derivatives where you can sell first and buy later. But it is to be bought within the derivative closing period. Ask you broker for more details.

Hi irfan,
selling first and buying when price come down is called short selling.
Eg; you can sell escorts when it is 90 in the opening trade and then buy it back @87 at or before closing. In cash market you can do it only intra-day i.e.you cannot carry forward the position to the next day.You are required to square up the position before closing or else your shares will go for auction and you have to pay more. In derivatives market you can shortsell and carry forward the position till the expiry. Any doubts you can write it here for further clarifications.

YES. Short selling is possible in ICICIDirect Margin Trading. This is intra-day trading in ICICIDirect. Sell a scrip with exposure according to the listed margin (eg.21%, 25% 45% etc) & buy back by end-of-day to square off your position. Normally ICICIDirect starts the automated square off process at 2:55 PM or so. This way you are at least assured of protection from carrying over a short position to the next day & being exposed to the exchange auction process, where you will lose a fair amount, normally to the extent of the freeze width of +/- 20%. ICICIDirect protects you thus.

You also have ICICIDirect MarginPlus trading wherein you can go long or short on your intra-day position but with a compulsory built-in stop loss.

Are u by any chance aware if ICICIDirect Margin or MarginPlus facilities are open to NRI's??

Check out the stock list on ICICIDirect.com. You will find a tabulated list of stocks tradeable on ICICIDirect with Y/N marked in the Margin, MarginPlus, NRI column etc. that will tell you which stocks you can trade in as an NRI, be it in cash or margin Trdg. Incidentally, ICICIDirect allows margin & margin+ trading only on the NSE.

The legend in the ICICIDirect stocklilst clearly states 'Institutions & NRI are permitted to trade ONLY in CASH product'. Furthermore my buy/sell browser has CASH as the ONLY Product. Under the circumstances, I suppose that the Y/N under NRI is restricted only for the cash products!
