Simultaneous long and short in same stock

Which country are you specific to?
In India for eg. Short-selling cannot be done for such extended periods.
Regulations earlier were very tight, more recently, you may get upto 2 days.
If the broker has to close the position or position goes to auction, a short penalty will be incurred.

I'm in USA. I do not believe there is a limit on duration of short position. Even if there is, you could just close both positions, and re-open again soon after, or even on a different symbol.
