Hi Friends,

Today I will write about another situation where the single MA system gives false signals. This happens when the stock is trading in a narrow range. The system generates whipsaws. That is, several BUY/SELL signals at short intervals but the trades will not result in any profit or may lead to losses. We can spot such regions in the chart and decide whether the BUY/SELL signals should be accepted or not.

When the stock is trading in a range we see that it does not make higher highs or lower lows but oscillates between two horizontal lines. These are the Support/Resistance levels. Unless the price breaks out of this region we can not take positions. If the stock price goes outside this region and is higher than the previous high we can enter a long position. The opposit is true for Selling the stock.

Therefore, when you get the signals from the AFL, check each of those charts to see whether the stock is range bound. Enter the trade only if the price has broken out of the range and had gone higher than previous high.

The following four charts show such whipsaws. The charts are for HCC, IOB, JPHYDRO and KFA. The region of whipsaws where the price is range bound is circled in the charts.

We can see that HCC was trading in the range 100-115 for quite some time and only on 18-09-09 it has broken out of the range and price has moved above 115. Now it is likely to move higher and the trade would be profitable.

Similarly IOB was trading in the range 78-90 till 10-09-09 and only after that it has broken out of the range and the stock is now in uptrend.

KFA was also range bound between 45-50 till 6-09-09 and only in the last two days has come out of the range and would be able to go higher.

JPHYDRO is still trading in the range 78-88 and unless it goes above this range (above 90) we can not go long in this stock.

Other similar patterns are present in several other stocks such as STERLIBIO, SUNPHARMA etc. You can verify by looking at the charts.

Therefore, it is advisable to confirm the signals by eye-balling the charts and then enter the trade if favorable.



Later we will see some other problem areas and try to find remedies.

Ur view on axis bank. It is trading above 21 EMA with narrow BB..from last 5- 6 trading session,, is it heading for a breakout in upward direction also RSI is in increasing mode.. and given a doji on last trading session.

Should one look for call option.
