In fact MANY online brokerage houses used to trade in NSE stocks only initially. Of course now you can trade in BSE stocks also.

What do you mean by "National Coverage" and "world class" AND "TRANSPARENT"?

well, a person can trade in any stock listed on NSE from anywhere ,whether from Jammu / Kanyakumari or from Assam or from Gujarat ,but same can not be said about a BSE stock.

Not just from India but from anywhere around the world. The same was not possible trading in BSE untill recently. By transparency I mean you get trade by trade information and also they have historical data since 1994. Same can not be said about BSE. My location is Saudi Arabia and I trade from here.

Thank u all for your replies.
One more question - someone mentioned that NSE stocks can be trade from anywhere in the world. WHY it is not the same with BSE? What's the hindrance?

And are these the only reasons why NSE has more volumes than BSE and it is popular?

The difference is technology. NSE has the most advanced technology for trading. Perhaps the best. And I have even heard that it is better than NYSE. Althogh the BSE has more listed companies than NSE but steadily they are delisting from BSE and are getting listed in NSE. Even then total turnover of NSE (percentage wise) is far more than BSE, so you dont face the problem of liquidity.
