Hi Raju,

Is there a reason why shorting is allowed only to those scripts?

Thanks in Advance,
Vairam.
Shorting is suitable only for experts. You have to make arrangements with the broker for shorting a stock. So the broker allows only those stock to short which he has in his account and charges you an extra fee for that. You can not short any stock (for delivery) which you do not own or else the trade will be settled by auction.

one can short any nse listed stock intraday(except t2t n z cats)
carry over of shorts(previously called badla) is not allowed now..
i can short any counter but it varies from broker 2 broker as some brokers give an exclusive list of shortin candidates(generally liquid ones) + which they hold in good qty in their acs.

Thanks for hte explanation Armhm. What do you mean when you say
"You have to make arrangements with the broker for shorting a stock."

Wouldn't I be able to short the allowed list of scripts if I have a margin account with a broker?

Not at all. You have to inform your CRM that you are going to short xyz stock for delivery. Shorting is different than buying. You can buy any stock with available margin. You can shortsell also but on intraday basis. Shorting for medium or long term has to be arranged. Because you are selling something which you do not own, so you have to borrow the stock from either your broker or any friend and make delivery. Naturally if you are borrowing something you have to pay interest on that. The broker or friend will ask you for how may days or weeks or months you want to remain short and accordingly they will charge you the interest. After the agreed period you will have to buy back the stock and return it to lender.

Hi Armhm/Deb99891,

Thanks for the quick and deatiled clarification.

All the books I have read are based on US markets and hence the confusion.

Thanks again,
Vairam.
