China confirms protesting PM`s Arunachal visit

Beijing, Feb 14: China on Thursday made public that it had expressed concern to India over Prime Minister Manmohan Singh`s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh but maintained that the two countries would continue with negotiations to resolve their outstanding issues.

"Regarding Mr Singh`s visit to that area (Arunachal Pradesh), we have expressed our concern. Our position (on the issue) is clear," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a regular bi-weekly news briefing here.

Liu, however, added "We hope that China and India will continue with consultations and negotiations which is good for peace and stability of the region. I believe both China and India are aware of this."

Stirring up a fresh controversy close on the heels of the bonhomie generated between the two countries particularly after Singh`s visit to Beijing, China had conveyed an oral protest to India over his assertion that Arunachal Pradesh is "our land of rising sun." It was conveyed at the lower levels at the Indian mission here.

Singh`s remarks were seen as a clear message to China which claims major parts of Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory.

China had told India that it was not proper to make such comments when the two countries were engaged in talks over the boundary row.

China`s protest was swiftly dismissed by India with Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee saying Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and the Prime Minster has the right to visit any part of the country.

UPA politicising Election Commission: BJP

New Delhi, Feb 14: The BJP on Thursday accused the UPA government of politicising the Election Commission (EC), saying the reported differences in the poll body on the issue of notice to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi were an example of its "partisan" approach.

"The Congress-led UPA government is committed towards one objective -- to destroy each and every constitutional authority in the country for its own narrow political gain," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar told reporters here.

"Media reports of rumblings in the Election Commission on the issue of notice to Sonia Gandhi have only reconfirmed our worst apprehension that it might be under partisan influence from within. On the matter of issuing notices to her, the split has become wide open," he said.

He said the "partisan" approach of the EC had become evident when it made "undue haste" in the arranging of by-poll for re-election of Gandhi and the "tardiness and reluctance" displayed in the by-election for BJP's B C Khanduri to continue in office as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

Javadekar said the "politicisation" of the EC became more apparent in the 'Maut ka Saudagar' controversy. "Double standards were witnessed initially in the serving of notices and the subsequent differentiated language used in the expression of displeasure to the concerned leaders," he said.

"The EC should be politically detached and equi-distanced from all political parties. If the practice of appointing partisan persons as members of the EC gets established as a precedent, it will provide a temptation to future governments to pack it with their own team of servile sycophants," he said.

JGBs inch up as Nikkei slumps but gains limited
Thu Feb 14, By Masayuki Kitano

TOKYO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Japanese government bonds edged higher on Friday, supported by a fall in Tokyo share prices and market expectations that the Bank of Japan was unlikely to raise interest rates anytime soon.

Gains were limited, however, after long-end Treasuries fell sharply overnight as U.S. bond traders turned their focus to inflation risks from more interest rate cuts signaled by the Federal Reserve.

"The moves have been a bit choppy today," said Naomi Hasegawa, senior fixed income strategist for Mitsubishi UFJ Securities. "Since both Treasuries and U.S. shares fell overnight it was hard to tell how JGBs would react."

Analysts say JGBs seem well supported overall as Japanese investors are likely waiting to buy on dips, especially when 10-year yields edge up towards 1.5 percent, a level last seen in late December.

March 10-year JGB futures rose 0.16 point to 137.61 2JGBv1, paring some of the losses they suffered the previous day.

The March contract rose as high as 137.68 in early trade, but later came off its highs.

Gains in JGB futures ran out of steam near 137.65, a level which had acted as resistance on the charts, said Hasegawa at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities.

Japan stocks slide on renewed economy, credit fears
Thu Feb 14, 2008 8:26pm EST (Updates to midmorning)

TOKYO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Japanese stocks slid nearly 2 percent on Friday as worries flared anew about the U.S. economy and fallout from the credit crisis, with Millea Holdings (8766.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and other insurers sliding.

Advantest Corp (6857.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and other chip-related shares fell after their U.S. peers tumbled.

The drop came a day after the benchmark Nikkei .N225 notched its biggest one-day percentage gain in six years.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke painted a sombre picture of a U.S. economy facing risks of both slow growth and inflation in testimony to Congress, setting off a Wall Street slide. [ID:n14460360]

The fall picked up steam after Moody's downgraded bond insurer FGIC, raising the possibility of more asset writedowns by banks and funds holding securities and adding to credit worries already stoked after Swiss bank UBS (UBSN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research) revealed tens of billions of dollars in risky debt exposure [ID:nL14686448].

"Although both the U.S. and Japan had surprisingly good indicators out this week, if you look at the actual contents they weren't really that good," said Yutaka Miura, a senior technical analyst at Shinko Securities.

Clinton leading Obama in Ohio, Pennsylvania: poll
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has double-digit leads over Barack Obama in Ohio and Pennsylvania, both crucial states in upcoming primaries, according to Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday.

Clinton, a New York senator, has lost eight straight nominating contests to Illinois Sen. Obama, but leads him 55 percent to 34 percent among likely Democratic primary voters in Ohio, the poll found.

Among Ohio Democrats, women back Clinton, 56 percent to 30 percent for Obama, while men back Clinton 52 percent to 42 percent, the poll found.

White Democrats favor Clinton 64 percent to 28 percent, while Obama leads 64 to 17 percent among black voters, according to the survey.

"Ohio is as good a demographic fit for Sen. Clinton as she will find," Peter Brown, an Quinnipiac University Polling Institute official, said in a statement.

"It has blue-collar America with a smaller percentage of both Democrats with college educations and African-American than in many other states where Sen. Obama has carried the day."

Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont hold nominating contests on March 4. Pennsylvania voters will select presidential nominees in a primary election on April 22.

The survey found that among likely Democratic primary voters in Pennsylvania, Clinton leads Obama 52 percent to 36 percent.

Indian High Commission in UK to outsource visa application

London, Feb 15: With a rising number of people from Britain queuing up to visit India, the Indian High Commission here will outsource the Visa Application Process from May this year.

"From Summer (May) this year, the same company that handles the Visa Application Process for the British High Commission in India - VFS Global - will do the Visa Application Process for us," Acting High Commissioner Asoke Mukerji said.

On an average the High Commission issued 500,000 visas in a year, the same as the British High Commission issues to Indians wishing to visit the UK.

Observing that in the last few years emergence of India as an economic power has attracted a lot of attention, Mukerji said Indian companies have so far acquired 65 British entreprises and "there may be an announcement about Tatas acquiring Land Rover soon."

Contrary to perception that Indian companies take away jobs, they were creating jobs here, the envoy said at a function to celebrate the Republic Day of India at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here last night.

Mukerji said the City of London proposed to hold an Indian cultural festival here in collaboration with the Nehru Centre this year and expected a quantum leap forward in the UK-India relations in the coming years.

Manick Dalal, Chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, UK and Lord Khalid Hameed highighted India`s rapid progress during the last few years and noted that the country is being recognised now as one of the power houses of the 21st century.
