Tea planter Mcleod Russel India Ltd. plans to invest 600 million rupees in jatropha cultivation over the next 2-3 years, its top official said on Monday.
This is the first time the company is foraying into jatropha cultivation.
The company plans to invest 150 million rupees to boost orthodox tea production to 10 million kg by 2007/08 from 3 million kg, Managing Director Aditya Khaitan told reporters.
Mcleod Russel expects exports to fall to 22 million kg in 2007/08 from 25 million kgs, he said. Its total production is about 75 million kilos of tea.
"This is because of the hardening of the rupee and lack of demand," Khaitan said, adding he expected better market conditions and realisations in the second half of the year.
The Indian rupee has risen 10 percent against the dollar to a nine-year high, making Indian products costlier abroad.
Shares in the company fell 1 percent to 59.50 rupees in the Mumbai market.
