How to calculate Open Interest for stocks.

#1
The site http://www.desitradermall.com/ provides stock data which has "open interest" along with other things such as open, high, low, close, and volume.

How is "open interest" calculated for equity? For F&O, it is the number of unexpired contracts, but for equity there is nothing like expiration of contracts. Any idea about it.

hi Ravi,

open interesr is the number of contracts unexecuted. unlike equity there is no float in the mrkts. Say i initiate a long on Nifty futures for may series and then i dont sq it till 31 May 07. it will be considered as the contract which is Open and will be added to Open intrest.

Every day it will be marked to market. On the expiry day ur contract will be settled finaly.

thanks

thats is what i knew, but in www.desitrader.com they are providing equity data which has open interest in it. I dont know what it means. Just see the file attached. Have a look at it. Here is the link http://www.desitradermall.com/mallsite/modules/DataDownload/filescraper.php?serve=securities/eod/SEOD20070531.zip

I was unable to upload the file. So, i have pasted a part of it here.

Hi Ravi,

Check out this file http://www.nseindia.com/archives/equities/mto/MTO_31052007.DAT. What is being referred as OI is actually the Deliverable Quantity(gross across client level). It is actually a part of the total traded Quantity. I am not sure if this can be taken as Open Interest for Cash stocks (not F&O).

If it can be then i would like to have this feature in the next release of my software GetBhavCopy. Can you please help me determine if I provide this data as Open Interest for Cash stocks it confirms to concepts of technical analysis.

Regards,
Hemen.

Re : inclusion of delivery data in get bhav copy

Dear Mr Hemen

Since amibroker has no separate column for delivery volume, open int column in the software can be used for that. What I would like is that ,capture delivery data from nse in such a way that it can come under column "open int".It is only for our convenience. I make it clear this cannot be misunderstood with the openint which is used in derivatives.

regards

Sundha

Re: Re : inclusion of delivery data in get bhav copy

Hi Sundha,

Thanks for the input. I think it will be better to provide this facility. By default Delivery volume should not be taken as Open Interest. However I will provide an option (check box). If that is selected then it will be treated as Open Interest.

Regards,
Hemen.

Dear Hemenbhai,
If you add this facility in new release of GetBhavcopy 2.0 it will be great thing. Deliverable quantity is important in sense that
:)"when percentage of deliverable quantity increase with volume you will come to know that somebody is CORNERING that equity and price will rise within short time so you can ride on it(with technicals offcourse) and some news will come surely in short time":p
