Pull back - a rise from a fall / a fall from a rise eg: sensex falls 150 points then either the same day or the next day it rises by 100 point. thats a pullback and vice versa.

Rally - Big up moves. eg: a stock rises greater than 10% in a day or 30% few trading sessions. this can be because of a news, rumour, results etc... a stock rally for even a few weeks or months like praj which has doubled to 400.

-hope this helps.

Rally
A period of sustained increase in the prices of stocks, bonds or indexes. This type of price movement can happen during either a bull or a bear market, when it is known as either a bull market rally or a bear market rally, respectively. However, a rally will generally follow a period of flat or declining prices.

A rally is caused by a large amount of money entering the market, bidding up the prices. The length or magnitude of a rally depends on the depth of buyers along with the amount of selling pressure they face. For example, if there is a large pool of buyers but few investors willing to sell, there is likely to be a large rally. If, however, the same large pool of buyers is matched by a similar amount of sellers, the rally is likely to be short and the price movement minimal.

Pullback
A falling back of a price from its peak. This type of price movement might be seen as a brief reversal of the prevailing upward trend, signaling a slight pause in upward momentum.

Often pullbacks are seen as buying opportunities after a security has had a large upward price movement. It is important, however, to analyze closely any pullback as it may be a sign of a definite trend reversal or a slight pause in the upward trend, each having very different trading implications

If anyone claims to have a sureshot answer to this (I mean get it right even 8 or 9 times out of 10), he/she can play the markets to become the richest person in the world.

I prefer Bulkowski's variation:

Pullback: Price breaks out downward, drops and then returns to the breakout price within 30 days.

Throwback: Price breaks out upward, climbs and then returns to the breakout price within 30 days.
