You can also invest in some small and mid-cap stocks. There are couple of excellent threads run by Seniors that can give you some stock recommendations. One is "Fundamental Picks" run by Mr. Ahmed. I have used his buy calls and they are really good. With your budget, you can still buy few stocks so if one goes down you wont lose all your money. Another option is to invest thru IPOs (good ones only) but with 5,000 chances of getting an allotment are slim if issue gets oversubscribed multiple times.

While steel has been a laggard, some of the Pipe companies are doing exceedingly well. With steel prices remaining stable their margins are improving. With pipelines likely to be accorded infrastructure sector status in the coming budget, would be a furher boost to these counters.

Two of my favourites in this sector are MAHARASHTRA SEAMLESS & WELLSPUN GUJARAT. Both have huge order books (& not just domestic but international orders too - specially in the larger dia spun pipe segment where the margins are higher due to lower competition). WELLSPUN has a full order book for the next 2 yrs (& are expanding capacity - including a greenfield JV in the US - to accomadate rising demand). The results have been excellent for both companies. This not being a fancy sector, the valuations are still reasonable.

So i think these 2 stocks (alongwith a smaller one called MAN INDUSTRIES) would be good buys on dips both for the short & medium-term.

Regards,
Kalyan.
