Knowing investors preferences and investment objective is definately important before advise. On the other hand, (and this will come to you with experience) everybody is a medium to long term investor who is asking you such questions. A short term investor rarely asks questions BEFORE acting on seemingly speculative market movements. A very long term investor wont even notice a 3-5 % fall in market. Good Luck! Mohan |

How are u? Many a times a short term new trader also ends up becoming an invstor. Not having stops in place...they keep hoping price will rebound and whne it goes at a level that they cannot bear the loss to they end up asking these type of questions. Talking from my own experience as a new trader Luckily being with traderji has taught me to keep my systems in place....Rgds Rahul |

I am fine, Thanks. Short term traders can use Sharpe's ratio. Sharpes ratio measures excess returns per unit of risk. By excess returns it means returns above the bare minimum required rate or return. In normal cases it is the risk free rate + some premium for liquidity, market risk and/or cost of borrowing if it is a leveraged/margin position. Sharpe ratio = (expected return on the stock - required rate or return)/risk Risk is usually the standard deviation. But one can use a downside loss or deviation from the expected return as a measure of risk. Therefore I would advise a short term trader to use a stoploss at the risk level, and compare the ratio among stocks before entering them. Hopefully, such an approach can help trader remain a trader and not go long for an extended period. Regards, Mohan |
