What motivates a trader and keeps them going ?

let me tell u my own experience
i was salaried executive earning 10 k per month
since 15feb2010 i left my job and since march i began intraday and delivery trading
i do not earn anything since newbee in trading
but the fact that work from home since 9 to 3.30 is good for me
and earning rs 300 every day is not big task(my simple logic is i use to earn rs 300 per day when i was salaried)
because i earn 100 to 200 rs in trainning period just by doing intraday in dlf
i hope i will make it big within 3 months

All of us have experienced our share of beating in financial markets.It can give you love and betrayel at the same time. I just want to discuss different motivations when we were really down.The day when we were really thrown out by the markets. How we came back.Share it !

What is that one factor which keeps traders going ?

Is it money ?
Fun ?
Hope to make it big ?
Boredom ?

I don't think it can be just one factor. There could many factors which influence us in doing this job.
Don't wanted to work under someone. Here nobody hires us nobody fires us. (except market) :rofl:
Passion for trading
Kinda addiction
Money
Finding strong interest in doing it.
Strong thirst/desire to learn and excel it.

Could be even more....

for me its all about MONEY honey.

For me the first motivation is solving a everchanging puzzle called the markets...and doing it with perfection...analysis,trade entry, adds, position sizing,exits everything in harmony.....

Money is the second motivation which comes if you take care of the first properly...

Third motivation is experiencing both the joy of winning and pain of loosing ( as long as winnings are much more than loosings one remains sane :lol

I think, it depends from person to person.
All of the above are valid reasons. Maybe I will add that some people trade to loose money, to hurt themselve, to make quick money, make easy money and so on.

For me, the reasons are many. which are close to my personal values. I trade for
- For freedom and flexibility
- To generate Time and Money so that I can spend more of it with my family, friends, society and myself.
- My passion towards trading and to excel in this field
- For psychological and intellectual challenge
- To improve my emotional quotient (EQ)

For me it started off with the idea of making lots of money in a short period of time. That was the initial motivation. But as time passed by and i started learning from mistakes , one thing that kept me up infact still keeps me up late at night is the fact these financial markets are so intriguing and i like to get some answers or complete answers via hindsight analysis of charts to justify this feeling of intrigue. And then test my hypothesis at the right edge of the chart.

And my lifestyle fits in perfectly with the flexibility that financial markets provide ,specially commodities and forex markets.
