No you do not need a demat account if you buy open ended mutual funds.

However you will need a demat account for funds listed on the exchanges.

Why do most of brokerage companys charge for transactions made from /to demat account ?
like - selling shares from demat accnt or buying shares n placing them into demat accnt?

Also, they say that we can place our shares in a pool/margin accnt with them and no need to place the shares into demat accnt to escape the demat charges.

Then whts the need to open a demat accnt>?

Opening a Demat account is very easy now. There are many broker companies who offers free demat account without any account opening charges.
    Simply it has two-steps:
You approach a DP and fill up the Demat account-opening booklet.
You will receive an account number and a DP ID number for the account.
for the easy process go with opendemataccount.in
