True. I do understand stock futures are already leveraged by about 85-90 percent if one is to look up the span margin file. Was just curious to know if there could be further funding of an already leveraged product over and above the 50 percent of SPAN for intraday ;)

Also, with 10 times margin funding for Equities, would my losses be only 10 percent of the total loss?
For example, lets say I buy 1000 stocks of XYZ at 100. Total would be 1 lakh. Assuming I have 10k in my account, and rest is funded by you. Now, say, the price falls by Rs.10 to 90 and my intraday position gets squared off.
Would my MTM loss be 10k or 1k ?
Thanks.
When you are trading at 50% SPAN you are basically trading with 25 to 30 times leverage, which is pretty crazy in itself, so we won't provide any further....

This is a noob or should I say noobest question that you have asked till date.... ;)....

If you buy with 10k for Rs 1lk ... why should the broker take your losses??? ;).... The positions would be auto squared off once it breaches the 60% mark in your account.... So if you have bought for 1lk with 1000 shares at Rs 100 ... When stock falls to 94 it gets auto squared off and you take the entire loss of Rs 6000 not the broker.... ;)... . Cheers...

Haha... well, thought as much and it is only fair that the trader takes the loss.
Reason why I asked is the concept of margin funding is totally new to me and I've never traded with margin provided by the broker.
I started trading only around last year and stuck to options alone. I've switched about 5 brokers in the last 8 months looking for lower and lower brokerage per lot. I know its bad to trade with real money whilst one is still learning the ropes, but what to dooooo... noobs are like this onleee. The blokes at Indiabulls and Religare had talked about margin funding but then I didn't quite like the idea of trading with the brokers money, so I didn't bother asking for details and didn't quite have a clue of how the profit/loss sharing works. Thanks for explaining.... :)

I thought most accounts were for dummies :)
As one big broker in the US had put it... I treat all clients as terminally ill, and try to keep them happy till they are gone :)

As for dummy accounts..... I would like one to be funded with a few million too :)

Hello Zerodha

1.I would like to know the amount of margin required to create a calender spread. Assume a simple spread....buy april nifty future and sell may nifty futures..

2. How do I know about margins on daily basis?.....I think margins change drastically as expiry nears....Any rule of thumb will be of great help

3. Any special button or tool in NOW.exe where I can create a spread order so that less margin is blocked from start itself.

4. One question regarding NOW.EXE.......Suppose NOW.exe is running & internet gets disconnected for few seconds. After reconnection will software refresh and pick quotes automatically or we will have to log out and log in again...I am facing few problems with net connection in last couple days

Thanks and keep up the good work:thumb:

confirmed......:D.........but if you want to hold it then full margin needed...
Thanks Ravi.

50k for option trading??? :) .... We would have to shut shop in no time at all... ;)....

1. For buying options you need to have your entire premiums... 10 times margin is for trading intraday stocks...

2. We don't provide 50k for options, For option writing the margin required is 50% of SPAN , with 5k you could probably just short 1 lot of a deep out of the money option....

CHeers...
Don't worry I was just testing. U can add few zeroes in the above figure :p
Thank you again.

Hi Vijay,

If you are order size for delivery is less than Rs 20000 and for intraday less than Rs 2lks, it makes sense to go for the alternate plan...

0.01% of 2lks is Rs 20 and 0.1% of Rs 20000 is Rs 20...

The reason we have the alternate plan is to give an option to traders with lower volumes in equity... We give this plan without any conditions , minimum brokerages or any such clauses....

Cheers....
Zerodha, ain't this plan make option more cheaper.

Say if I trade nifty option 10 lots 5000 per lot i.e 50K intra day...My brokerage with be Rs 5 and that even including both side, thus I saved Rs 35. Am I correct ?

Hi Anurag:

Write to us at [email protected] and we'll give you all the details on account opening. It is fairly simple really. :)

The mobile app of NOW works very well on Android and iPhone. It supports BlackBerry and most Java enabled phones too.
