Looking to invest in India as an NRI from Singapore

#1
Hi,

I'm an Indian citizen working in Singapore. Currently, I do not have any bank accounts in India. Is it possible for me to open an ICICI Direct NRE - PINS account, Demat account and apply for a PAN from Singapore without going to India?

I contacted the local ICICI branch but they told me to contact ICICI Direct in India instead. The person who answered the call told me that it was not possible to open a Demat account without visiting a local branch in India? Is this true? If that's the case, what other banks/brokers would you suggest for investing from Singapore.

Thanks in advance.

My experiences with ICICI has been very unpleasant.
They take a long time to open the account. However their statement that one has to visit India is wrong. Many of my friends have opened the accounts from abroad. The bank does not have a centralised policy and every body takes his own decision -really sick and stupid. Wonder how this bank survives.
