No, you need not make loss always. When the short goes for auction, if the price is lower, trhen you may gain also. This is rare, but still possible and happens.

I think when it goes for Auction, CMP alone is not the criteria. CMP or your selling price + 20% whichever is higher is charged. You are bound to lose 20% or above.

BTW, with ICICI auto square starts @ 2.45, chances of going to Auction are very slim.

ya agree with pakatil. but if website is not working auto-square does not work as well.

Auto square off in short selling prevent you from major loss that would have incurred if the shares would have gone for auctioning.

Me too had similar experience with Sharekhan. I had some shares in my demat which were yet be delivered . Thinking that it is real, I sold them . After that I got a email saying that I am short of stocks.
They blocked 130% of the amount. They closed the transaction on the same day evening through auction. I had to bear some loss.
Please contact their call center,if you are selling the shares which are in the state "yet to deliver" .
I think this peculiar problem happens only in India.

can manual square off is possible in sharekhan?what is basically square off and when we can do it in sharekhan?I am very new in this market i got a bharti 10 shares at 825 but the average price they putted in dmat as 228 and when today when i sold it at 860 the average price of sold share was 853.90 only.I don't know ahy they given very less average?if anyone know please let me know so that when in future i sell any share i should know what can be its average price and how much profie i can do bye selling it at that time.I am very curious to know my answers.Please help me.
