Place orders after market is closed

Hi,

i would like to know whether buy or sell order can be placed after or while the market is closed.

If no means why shouldn't we do that? Kindly clarify.

its not possible to place the order after the market is closed... how can you expect such unrealistic scenario????

It depends on your broker. If the broker allows AMO (After Market Order) you can place a BUY or SELL order. But what actually happens is the Exchange does not accept the AMO. So, your AMO is just lying with your broker till the market open on next trading day. On the next trading day, your broker sends all the AMOs to the exchange and your order gets executed as and when your price is reached and the quantity required is available for trading. Other than this you have no advantage or preference by placing AMO. Some brokers do not allow AMO.

Check with your broker if he allows after market orders. These are routed to the exchange the following day on opening.

thanks for the information. I have checked with the broker and he said that orders placed after market closed will be cancelled automatically.

some on-line transaction sites have the choice of placing orders after office hours also. If you are an office-goer,etc., you can place order with these sites at the expected rates. if the rates are approached, sale / purchase will take place on the next working day. But, the transaction can happen only if the rates are within the filter margin prescribed by the stock exchange. I think ICICI direct has got the facility

In case Market is opened ,MARKETS OPEN in green colour is seen,
similarly Market is closed ,MARKETS CLOSED in red colour is seen,
when after hour market is open then AH OPEN in green colour is seen.
This is the not notation followed by Sharekhan,the facility may differ from
other brokerage house.
