Beginner here, need a push in the right direction

#1
Hello All,

I'm 22 and finished my graduation in Computer Engineering and am now ready to delve into the world of finance and economics.

Now, having an engineering mind, i seldom make conclusions before having firm knowledge about any topic, and i would like to take the same approach towards finance. Seen alot of knowledge transfer on this forum and really yearn for the finance gurus to guide me on this one.

I would like to learn right from THE BASICS of finance such as :
* the entire process from the formation of a company, to issuing its stock, to the stock ups and downs and how factors affect it. Something like a case study or an example to understand how it works.
* How one stock market (BSE,NSE) affects another country's stock market (like NYSE or NASDAQ)
* what are stock market points (what it means when you say stock market is down 200 points ?)
* why stock value goes down, what are the factors that affect the stock market
* why doesnt stock market continue at the point at which it left off the last day
* why are gold, crude oil etc. prices given in newspapers everyday and how do they affect stock market ?
* if i hold a certain stock, what benifits am i entitled to ?

I know thats too many questions, some of which are really naive and i dont expect you to answer than but i would really appreciate a push in the right direction. I have known many people have an extrinsic knowledge of finance but that knowledge is shallow and leads nowhere. Any gurus here can tell me some good websites, or good basic books (which dont assume prior knowledge)

please tell me friends some stock-watch websites please my friends
Hi Kub,
What exactly do you mean by 'stock-watch' websites?

If I were you, refer to Rajputz post above and click the link to beginners guide. It will give you so much more, and is a very good place to start.

Hope this helps,

You don't need this knowledge, but if you want it at all, read Company Law. You can read the basics on the net. You should know terms like equity, private equity, IPO, FOP, etc. Google for all these.

How one stock market (BSE,NSE) affects another country's stock market (like NYSE or NASDAQ)
To keep it simple: Emotionally in very short term, and fundamentally in other timeframes. Both of these words are very short to explain anything in detail, but I do not want to go into intricate details of it.

what are stock market points (what it means when you say stock market is down 200 points ?)
Nothing, but arbitray scale to measure performance. usually, index points.

why stock value goes down, what are the factors that affect the stock market
The only thing that matters is supply and demand. But don't let that simple statement fool you. If it was easy, everybody would have made money in the stock market, however, as per popular estimates, only less than 10% make money here. Rest loose.

why doesnt stock market continue at the point at which it left off the last day
price is dependent upon bids from buyers and asks from sellers. The exchange merely acts as a match-maker. Bidders and sellers have their own reasons for selling at a particular price. If buyers and sellers decide to trade at a particular price, it will.

why are gold, crude oil etc. prices given in newspapers everyday and how do they affect stock market ?
These are of attraction to commodity traders. These too affect equity markets.

if i hold a certain stock, what benifits am i entitled to ?
Bonus shares, dividend, etc. However, you can loose money too.

PS: From my personal interaction with dealers, broker analysts, broker house owners, I know one thing that not many are aware of how stock prices "exactly" change.
