REF function

hi seniors.
The formula "ref( C, 12 )" returns the closing price 12 periods ahead (this means looking up the future) . anybody have more details. which means ref( C, 12 ) = Closing price of 12 periods ahead from current price C. My doubt is how to calculate closing price 12 periods ahead ? is it assumption?
