Quantitative analyst, someone who applies mathematical techniques to financial investment
Quantitative fund, an investment fund managed by use of numerical methods
Quantitative investing, investing using such techniques

A quantitative analyst is a person who works in finance using numerical or quantitative techniques. Similar work is done in most other modern industries, but the work is not always called quantitative analysis. In the investment industry, people who perform quantitative analysis are frequently called quants. See List of quantitative analysts.

They are Important for Industry, just to track figures at microscopic and mathematical lever, directly they are useless for large number of traders and Investors. but they do contribute their knowledge for macro economy at micro level.

I personally believe, as an Investor one should not be scared if peoples are panicking and selling in bear market and yelling 'sell' on streets. one should never be distracted if he had done his homework properly. he should hold even if his mother in law is telling him to sell, But if a quant tell you to sell, sell the shitload and run for your life..!!

I am not sure about academic qualifications but they are generally involved into complex mathematic calculations like valuation of a mortgage based securities, calculation futures and options pricing, look for black scholes method. if was invented by quants, he won nobel for that thing and funny part is 80% quants are still not satisfied with BSM options valuation method. lookout there its huge and its boring with no usefullness in real trading.

Sorry but this statement is funny. Do you know that quants often make an assumption of normal or lognormal distribution of asset returns for their regression studies? In reality I am yet to come across any asset that follows such a return profile, perhaps interest rates in the early twentieth century.

I would do on the contrary, if a quant tells me to sell, and the random world is buying, I would buy. Microstructure is where all the action is!

Ever heard of LTCM, run by the big bosses of modern quant finance including Scholes and Merton, crashed miserably as they failed to learn that numbers don't drive civilizations.

All said, quant is one of the highest paid job profiles currently in the labor market. But a certificate wont get you anywhere. You need a PhD from a top American or European school to even get an interview call. I have a masters from a top European school with an internship at a major German brand and a stint at one of most prestigious math departments in the world, which landed me offers only from prop trading houses. No major hedge fund ever contacted me. But having worked as a trader, I think the real fun lay in the markets and not in the books.

Are you serious? You found Quant's opinion more important than your Mother-in-law's and lived to talk about it? You are one lucky dude, I'd have to say.
